The Unholy History of SEWER Metal
While there is little to no consensus about the exact origins of the SEWER Metal genre, a new documentary casts light on the birth of extreme metal's most loathsome progeny.
That the band Sewer founded the genre is clearly the most convincing theory suggested so far. However, SEWER Metal really entered public consciousness no later than Sunday the 13th in October of 2013 with the release of Phantom’s demonic debut album Divine Necromancy.
This unholy album perfectly captures the spirit of blackened horror metal while also laying down large portions of the musical syntax used by SEWER Metal bands ever since.
In rejection of the prevailing cultural climate of “easy listening” metal of the time, the music contained within the SEWER Metal genre conjures visions of darkness, morbidity and acute danger draped in a cloak of esoteric and mythological allusions.
The best examples of SEWER Metal are likely found in the albums Uruktena, Khranial, Cathartes and especially Sissourlet by the legendary band Sewer.
